As comic book lovers and overall nerds, the MightyVille team knows that our fellow nerds like to go out and have a good time, but don't like to do the same ol', boring things that are just fine for non-nerds. So, MightyVille has created Nerds Nite Out, a monthly feature where our members go out and explore their comics interests and inner nerdiness, and share the fun times here!

For our first Nerds Nite Out, MightyVille headed over to the California Academy of Sciences for Turtle Power Nightlife and indulged in loads of science nerdiness, good times, and turtle lovin'. Cowabunga dude!

Sommer K on Nerds Nite Out

That's me, Sommer K, at the Cal Academy of Sciences

Our first activity was to make our way to the Planetarium for "Science Tonight Live: Sea Turtle Spotlight", where we learned about Leatherback Sea Turtles, the largest turtles in the world.

These giant reptiles come to the California coast regularly to eat their favorite food, Brown Sea Nettle Jellyfish. Look how huge they are!

This year, the largest critical habitat in the world for sea turtles was established off the California, Oregon and Washington coastline. You can learn more about helping these endangered turtles at www.seaturtles.org.

After learning about real turtles that live in our local area, we moved on to spend time with our favorite comic book turtles, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

Part of Turtle Power Nightlife included the opportunity to play old school TMNT games on Nintendo and Super Nintendo - sweet! A super cool group called homefrys, who organize public & private game nights around the Bay Area, set it all up and we ninja'd up at the chance to show our turtle power! So many memories were relived as our turtles kicked vintage video game butt across widescreen tvs.

For the rest of Turtle Power Nightlife, we explored the other exciting exhibits at Cal Academy of Sciences, including their extensive aquarium and new Earthquake exhibit. We were all shook up (haha) by their simulation of San Francisco's 2 major earthquakes, the 6.9–magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989 and the 7.9–magnitude Great San Francisco quake of 1906.

Once we'd fully explored nightlife at Cal Academy of Sciences, we finished up by heading over to SF's Inner Richmond district and ending the night sweetly at Toy Boat Dessert Cafe. At Toy Boat, we enjoyed tasty desserts and their eclectic toy collection while reading TMNT comics and generally nerding out - a fine closing to a fun & nerdy nite out!
