Shadowman #3

Valiant Entertainment’s Shadowman continues at full throttle! MightyVille got an advance look at Shadowman #3, and Joe Kach gives you the low-down on what to expect.

One note of excitement before reading on: There’s a talking monkey!

[Warning: Possible Spoilers Ahead]

Shadowman #3 picks up right where #2 left off, finding our reluctant band of magic heroes with their backs against the wall. Mr. Twist keeps putting on the pressure and it’s up to Jack Boniface, the new Shadowman, to learn a few more tricks to pull Alyssa and Dox’s Abbettor butts out of few awful situations.

How does Jack learn those tricks, you ask? Did I mention the talking monkey?

The creative team of Justin Jordan and Patrick Zircher introduces us to Jaunty, Jack’s skull-faced, monkey-guide in “The Deadside”, a sort of world-between-worlds that only history’s Shadowmen have access to. Called the undead New Orleans”, it’s also the home of doomed souls. “And the souls hunger.”

The issue opens with quite an explosive action sequence, and then quickly transitions into a much-needed informative tale. Not only do we see The Deadside, we are also given some insight into the Shadowman history and their mission, information delivered by quite the surprising and touching messenger. While this bit was a little on the slow side with some heavy exposition, the revelations presented within are worth it. Master Darque is very close to again breaking through to our world, and Jack will need all the training and knowledge he can get before facing his foe. And that day is coming soon.

Another solid issue in the new Shadowman saga from Valiant Comics, and a nice little breather as we battle our way to the conclusion of one of the best opening arcs of the last year.

And, just in case you missed it: There’s a talking monkey!
