I’ve been devouring almost anything Valiant I could get my hands on this past week. I loaded up on titles at Heroes Con this weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was kind of embarrassing the gusto I put into finding literally everything that had been published. I was largely successful, having only a couple of current issues on my list that I missed in my search.

I was luckily able to find the first two issues of Harbinger Wars, a crossover between Bloodshot and Harbinger. Despite having just read the first trades of both titles, this series was easy to pick up on as I read. The third issue, out this week, gives us a glimpse at a fan-favorite group from the 1990s Valiant, H.A.R.D. Corps.

This group of government special ops had been put out of commission by the creation of Bloodshot. Fortunately for their careers, Bloodshot has gone off the reservation and their skills are needed once again. Bloodshot has freed a group of Psiots, but all has not gone as planned. The groups were split in two, one with Bloodshot another with the Renegades.

This third issue has a lot of moving chess pieces. It acts to establish the big finale coming up with the fourth and final issue. All these moving parts have to assemble. Generally, these kind of “everybody get in you paces for the final act” kind of issues are dull, but there’s a real sense of danger and immediacy that hangs over this issue. Everyone is converging on the casino in Las Vegas. Blood starts to be spilled in this issue, which puts everyone on edge. H.A.R.D. Corps abrupt arrival adds one more element to an already volatile solution. The issue clips along at a fast pace, but this isn’t a breezy feeling outing.

I haven’t said this about a crossover in a while, but I’m looking forward to the ending. Valiant is making a believer out of me.
