Shadowman #7 was one of the first Valiant books I read. At the time, I considered it to be the weaker of the two issues I initially read (the other being Archer & Armstrong #10). That wasn’t a slight against the series, because it was still a great issue. Since that initial tip-toeing into the Valiant Universe, I have hungrily consumed everything Valiant has printed in the last year. My assessment of Shadowman #7 was good, but issue #8 was great from beginning to end.

Master Darque continues to unfold his sinister plan to return to our world from the Deadside. Much of this issue centers on his dastardly machinations as he converses with Dox, who is now trapped on the Deadside strapped to Darque’s vine.

The Deadside is perfectly dreary and dark place. The first part of the issue gives us a glimpse at what Darque’s Eaters actually do here as they feast on the souls that are trapped in this shadowy realm. Their macabre hunting of souls is shudder inducing to both the characters in the story and for us readers.

The scary fate that awaits those is perfectly captured by Roberto de la Torre’s and Neil Edwards’ eerie art. The oppressiveness of the Deadside just oozes off the page. The writing is great, but the art just takes everything to another layer.

In the real world, Jack, Alyssa, and Baron Samedi are trying to process the loss of Dox. Jack flashes back to happier times, remembering some his earlier interactions with his now lost comrade. These memories force him into a rash decision. Forging an alliance with Baron Samedi, the two embark on a journey through the Deadside that promises a long trail of destruction.

It’s inevitable that Baron Samedi is going to find some way to twist their alliance into his favor, but that surprise will at least have to wait until next month. Justin Jordan, Roberto de la Torre, Neil Edwards, and all the rest of the crew should be commended on producing such a great issue. I’m surprised at how much I’ve grown to love this title in the last month.

Count me in as a believer for this title. If you’re not yet reading, what are you waiting for? This book has quickly become one of my favorite reads.
