Number 1 Bullets: 11-19-14

Each week, we take an early look at the new first issues from Dark Horse, Dynamite, IDW, Image, and Valiant Comics to share our thoughts and let you know what we think you should pick up.  Not the best week for first issues, but still some stuff that some may want to check out.

This week, Geoff Deen, Sam Moyerman, and Joe Kach review  Intersect #1, Sinergy #1, and Punk Mambo #0.

INTERSECT #1

Intersect, by Ray Fawkes, is one of the more imaginative titles I have read lately; but I cannot tell if that is a good thing or not. The art has to be looked at on two levels: one positive and one negative. The art is absolutely beautiful. Soft pastel colors in what appears to be a water color effect. It flows well and is really impressive to look at. However, it does not convey the story or character at all. I have read this title twice and I really have no idea what is going on. That means I am either too stupid to pick up what the creator is telling me, visually and literally; or that the creator did not keep the end reader in mind while planning out his artistic vision. The story, from what I can tell, seems really interesting on the surface level. We appear to be following a young girl with either multiple personalities or she is actually able to switch between parallel selves. Unfortunately none of this is made clear and it really hurts the title. I understand making art that forces readers to expand their minds, and I understand that authors should not have to hold our hands through every aspect of a story's plot, but this book pushes both of those to an extreme that I personally found off-putting. This is a love it or hate it book if there ever was one, and I do not love it. (Geoff

SINERGY #1

The good news about this book is Michael Oeming still draws a hell of a story. His signature design style is present here. The heavy and impressive use of blacks. Fun and simple storytelling at its best. Taki Soma's colors match up nicely and her artwork in the backup is almost as strong as the main story... If only all this book was were artwork, it would be pretty much a perfect read. But right from the opening line, the book is completely overwritten and full of cliches. I wanted to scream, "We get it, you can stop hitting us over the head with it," while reading; they made it that stubborn. For fans of Oeming's art, this one is a keeper; the writing could keep people from continuing though.

PUNK MAMBO #1

Punk Mambo #0 (Valiant)-

3 out of 5

Unfortunately, Valiant's first title starring a character not previously seen during the publisher's earlier incarnation left me a little wanting. The infusion of punk music with voodoo magic written by Peter Milligan ... that concept in and of itself is very compelling. However, the execution was a bit "by the numbers' and unoriginal with both a predictable plot and ending. Milligan introduced us to Punk Mambo during his Shadowman run and this story fills us in on her exposition-heavy background. Raised as a high-society Londoner, Victoria rebels and through as series of unfortunate, yet foreseen, circumstances, she finds herself as a voodoo queen in the Louisiana Bayou. The artwork by Robert Gill fits the story well, but not enough to pull this above the traditional fare. Which is too bad, because this is a promising concept. Still ... who knows what roads lie ahead for Punk Mambo? The cover by Russell Dauterman is gorgeous. If you've been following Shadowman, then you should pick this up because it will definitely add to that story.

Don't just take our word for it ... Pick up the comics yourself and let us know what you think!!
