NUMBER ONE BULLETS: 12-17-14

Each week, we take an early look at the new first issues from Dark Horse, Dynamite, IDW, Image, and Valiant Comics and share our thoughts to let you know what we think you should pick up. Looks like Flash Gordon has some Faith in the Holiday Season this week!

This week, Geoff Deen, Sam Moyerman, and Joe Kach review Rumble #1, Flash Gordon 2014 Holiday Special #1, and Harbinger: Faith #0.

RUMBLE #1

Rumble #1 (Image)-

2.5 out of 5

In my reviews of all these #1 issues recently, there has been a trend of books where the creators simply throw everything at the wall and wait a few issues to see what sticks.  Rumble, by John Arcudi and James Harren is no different.  There's some good things about this trend.  For the most part it means a ton of action and crazy things happening all over to really grab your attention.  On the other hand it also means that story elements come and go with no real thread tying them together in any way.  Both parts of that are found in this book.  It's still mostly fun, Harren's artwork is terrifically moody and Arcudi's dialogue works well.  But it takes awhile to get going, to the point where the opening pages of the book don't make any sense, even once you finish it, and there are jumps to and from different scenes that don't seem to fit any narrative sense either.  You have to figure that they'll bring it all together in the end.  So if a tale about a demon attacking someone in a bar and then the bartender stealing his sword interest you, I'd recommend checking out this book. (Sam)

FLASH GORDON 2014 HOLIDAY SPECIAL

Flash Gordon 2014 Holiday Special #1 (Dynamite)-

3 out of 5

It's Christmas Time on Mongo and we get three Holiday tales via Dynamite's Flash Gordon channel. The opening chapter starring Flash is the best, while the other two play their part well enough. Why are there Christmas celebrations on Mongo? Sounds like Hanukkah is limited to Earth though. But not New Year's Eve! That's a party anywhere in the galaxy. There's nothing terribly exciting contained here, but there are some moments of cleverness that I appreciated. As far as Holiday specials go, this book does it's job. Dynamite's Flash Gordon fans may want to pick this up and there's some pretty good art inside. (Joe)

HARBINGER: FAITH #0

Harbinger: Faith #0 (Valiant)-

3 out of 5

Joshua Dysart and artist Robert Gill bring us a zero issue showing how Faith ended up with rest of the team in Valiant Comics' Unity title.  This comic was a good look at a tough decision from our main character, Faith, who is a break from the typical super hero mold.  A heavy girl since she was young, Faith comes to grips with the choice between letting go of her safety net and setting out to try something new.  This covers both her career as a super hero and her love life.  It all felt pretty honest and was a pretty good read, probably even better for readers who are more familiar with the Valiant line of comics and their characters.  The art was solid, but not ground-breaking.  Good use of colors and clean lines, though most panels felt very static.  I feel that this would be a great read for those invested already in the Valiant universe, but it is not something I would recommend to new readers looking for a jumping on point. (Geoff)

Don't just take our word for it ... Pick up the comics yourself and let us know what you think!!
